Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Doula?
A doula is a non medical support person dedicated to you and your birth team. We help you through education, advocation and physical birth support. We do NOT replace your partner, family or friends. We support them as well as yourself by helping them navigate the labor process with you.
When is the best time to hire a Doula?
It it important to start your doula search as soon as possible. Many start interviews as soon as the pregnancy is confirmed. Interviewing early ensures that you will find a doula that matches your ideals and compliments your birth team well. It is never too late to hire a doula, but you will find that we book up quickly and are harder to accommodate the closer to your due date you are.
How can a Doula support me if I have a C-section?
If a C-section becomes planned due to pregnancy complications, a doula is a great source of information and education to help you and your birth team understand and become comfortable with the procedure. We are full or resources that can guide you through decision making, hospital policies and even evidence based information on best practices and breastfeeding. If an emergency C-section is needed, a doula is there as a constant support for you and your support people at the hospital. We can help with breastfeeding in recovery and help you work through any possible trauma or questions you may have.
How can a Doula support me if I get pain medication?
Having a doula, even when given pain medication, can still be essential. We bring knowledge, information and experience to help you navigate your labor confidently. Sometimes, pain medication may not work effectively or fail all together, It is smart to have that extra support in the event that happens.
How will I know that my Doula will make it to my birth?
Birth can be unpredictable, but it is our top priority to be available to you when you go into labor. Doulas go on-call for 4 weeks around your due date and know that we can be called to a birth at any moment during that time. We take on a limited number of clients a month and in the event of an emergency, a back up doula is notified and present.
Will my insurance cover doula services?
Usually, no. Most insurances do not cover doula services. Some may reimburse you for 'out of network' services and some doulas participate in the NJ Medicaid programs. Labor to Love, LLC does not participate with these programs, but if finances are a concern, accommodations may be available.
Should i still take a childbirth education class, even if i have hired a doula?
ABSOLUTELY! Your doula will be a huge source of support and education, but building a strong foundation of knowledge is important. Finding the right educational course for you and your birth team is key. When in doubt, you can always refer to your doula for referrals and recommendations of local and virtual labor and delivery classes.
What should i be looking for in a doula?
It is always important to find a doula whom you are comfortable with, first and foremost! You are inviting a complete stranger into your birth space. You want to make sure that this person has your best interests in mind. A doula is a professional and, as such, should be open and willing to accommodate your ideal birthing scenario. Sometimes, certain circumstances hinder a doula's emotional availability to be unbiased and truly invested in your vision. And that's OK! There is a famous saying among doulas that, " There is a doula for everyone." That is why it is important to interview many doulas before making this important decision. Other attributes that you may find helpful to ask in your interview process is credentials, experience, trainings and of course, availability.
will my doula replace my partner?
Absolutely NOT! Your doula is a part of your birth team and is there to ensure that everyone has their role in your birth. A doula is particularly great at helping your support team navigate the labor process WITH you and encouraging them to engage with you and your providers. We are not here to replace anyone, but to continuously support and build your already amazing team!
