Why should I hire a birth photographer?
For many people, there are two extraordinarily important moments in their lives; their wedding day and the birth of their children. You would obviously hire a wedding photographer, so why not a birth photographer? Birth photography captures the emotions and moments of childbirth that many forget after their child is born. Photos of the day your baby was born are cherished memories and keepsakes to look back on for years to come.
What can a birth photographer do that my spouse/ partner cannot?
As a birth photographer, I am specially trained to take pictures during labor, birth and post partum. That is my job. And just like me, your partner and family have a job to support you during your labor and birth. I also bring with me a host of equipment that helps me grab those amazing moments in the best exposure and lighting possible. While your partner is busy taking care of you, I am photographing the little moments that can be easily forgotten or missed.
when would you join me during my labor and for how long will you be present?
I will join you at your birthing space when you have reached active labor or 5cm. I will then be with you for the entire labor, birth and 1-2 hours post partum no matter how long it takes.
What Birth environment do you photograph in?
I photograph home birth, hospital birth, cesarean sections and un-assisted home births. It is important to discuss with your provider your wish for a photographer and the limitations of the facility you are delivering at BEFORE you sign contracts with me.
What happens if you miss the birth or are unable to attend my birth?
Fast labors do happen from time to time and there have been instances where a labor progressed too quickly and I did not make it to the delivery. Fast labor is not a reason for refund, but I still try to get some intimate post partum pictures once I do arrive and stay several hours through the newborn assessment. If you are sent for a C-section and I am not allowed into the OR, I offer in home, lifestyle newborn photography to make up for the missed birth. I try to accommodate client circumstances the best I can.
Will my photos be posted on your website?
Only if you say it is ok! At contract signing, you will be given a release form to fill out. This is where you can specify what photos are ok to use on my site and social media platforms (if any at all). I am very conscious of photo content and try not to post anything too "graphic" or revealing. If I wish to post a more intimate pictures, I will ask permission first.
Will you be my doula as well as my photogrApher?
I recommend you hire a separate doula for your birth. As a doula, I do offer some photographs, but they are very few and are mostly taken after the birth when my services as a doula are less needed. It is important for me to focus solely on the job at hand to make sure that I am giving you my best work possible. There are many talented doulas in the area that I have worked with in the past that I can recommend.
